⚡ The Monthly Buzz ⚡

BuzzSumo's new monthly newsletter for top trends and content from over the last month

Hey Buzzies,

Welcome to the second installment of The Monthly Buzz! I’ll be sharing some data-led trends and content with you, but before we get to that, I wanted to share one of my favorite reads of the month: How Airbnb Created An SEO Moat That Seems Invincible.

This post by Ross Simmonds made our heads spin with new ideas here at the BuzzSumo HQ. It’s about finding inspiration wherever you look – ie. reworking B2C strategies for B2B SEO success. Give it a read!

📈 Trend of the month #1 📉

We’re getting into DIY investing in a BIG way

After the GameStop saga, we did a bit of digging into investment content and found:

  1. There’s been a 981% uplift in engagement for ‘How to’ content around investing. From Feb 2020 – Feb 2021 a total of 3,251 pieces of content were published around investing, with shares and engagement peaking highest in Feb 2021.
  2. Content published around this topic also rose by 111% within the same time frame. DIY investment articles increased, presumably as a result of the GameStop / Robinhood stock frenzy.

In line with this, Google reported that search interest around investment terms – namely “How to invest” – hit an all time high in the US. So, according to both search AND social, there’s a lot of opportunity to be had in creating investment based awareness content to meet increased demand.

📈 Trend of the month #2 📉

Over 5 years we’ve published 64% more content

While researching my latest piece of content on the Skyscraper Technique, I decided to do a bit of digging into BuzzSumo’s index of 8bn+ articles.

Over the last five years a mammoth 1.7bn articles have been published online.

I knew that published content was bound to have increased over time, but was still surprised to see a huge 64% rise – that’s a grand total of 171m more articles than in 2016.

But I guess that’s what happens when there’s a global pandemic – we’ve suddenly got a lot more to talk about!

Before this, content was increasing in volume by around 20% each year – a figure definitely not to be ignored – especially if post-pandemic content returns to this steady upward trajectory.

What does this mean? Now more than ever, our content needs to work harder. No pressure 😅
