Hey Buzzies,

Welcome to the 15th installment of The Monthly Buzz!

If you enjoy reading, tell your friends to subscribe here.

Today, we’ve analyzed our fave event of the year: Eurovision!

And we’ve also looked at the impact of refreshing your “yearly” B2B content 🌲

Read on to see what we’ve found…

📈 Insight of the month #1 📉

Who are the top contenders for Eurovision?

We’re BIG Eurovision fans here at BuzzSumo.

This year, we wondered: Can we predict the top Eurovision contenders based on the engagement they have generated in the lead up to the big event?

So here goes…

Using our YouTube Analyzer, we’ve dissected videos published by Eurovision’s official YouTube channel. The engagement metrics we focused on were:

  • Likes
  • Comments
  • Links
  • Shares
  • Views

We totted up these figures to discover the most engaged with Eurovision entries so far. Here are the videos if you’re looking to update your playlist 🎶🎵

  1. 🇪🇸 Spain: Chanel – SloMo
  2. 🇳🇴 Norway: Subwoolfer – Give That Wolf A Banana
  3. 🇺🇦 Ukraine: Kalush Orchestra – Stefania
  4. 🇮🇹 Italy: Mahmood & BLANCO – Brividi
  5. 🇦🇹 Austria: LUM!X feat. Pia Maria – Halo
  6. 🇳🇱 Netherlands: S10 – De Diepte
  7. 🇦🇱 Albania: Ronela Hajati – Sekret
  8. 🇷🇸 Serbia: Konstrakta – In Corpore Sano
  9. 🇵🇱 Poland: Ochman – River
  10. 🇬🇧 UK: Sam Ryder – Space Man

While there’s still a month for things to change, so far it looks like Spain is the top contender – if engagement is anything to go by.

📈 Insight of the month #2 📉

Why you should be refreshing your “year” based content

We took a sample of 10,000 B2B articles featuring the date “2021” in the title, but took our analysis back five years, to discover content that had been published and subsequently updated with a “2021” date.

Then we analyzed the top 50 headlines (based on shares and links) from this sample, and split them up by initial publish date (which you can see in the “X” axis).

We noticed a pattern: The majority of top performing content was actually published years ago, but has since been updated.

In fact, the “2021” content that performed best was published as far back as 2017. It has over double the amount of shares & links as the “2021” content that was actually published in 2021.

This proves we should be optimizing and updating our existing “year” based content, if we want to build strong, cumulative engagement.
