This month we’ve extended our B2B content marketing research from last month, and taken a look at the impact of journalist-created B2B content throughout the customer journey.

📈 Insight of the month #1 📉

The power of the journalist 💁‍♀️

In our B2B research, we analyzed the most engaging content at different stages of the customer journey, and dived into the content types that are most likely to land a link or a share.

But in BuzzSumo, you also have the ability to analyze journalist content…

So we decided to do just that!

We analyzed B2B journalist content across:

  • Business news (ie. Harvard Business Review, Entrepreneur)
  • Mega brands (ie. Apple, Microsoft)
  • Brands (ie. Semrush, Ahrefs)
  • Marketing & tech news (ie. Venturebeat, Search Engine Journal, Social Media Examiner, Content Marketing Institute)

And found that journalists tend to generate a whopping 8x more engagement for their content, on average, than all B2B content authors.

They also earn an additional 1.19 links.

Journalist content undeniably packs a punch, but we mustn’t overlook the fact that these content creators are often writing for major publications, with huge distribution networks.

📈 Insight of the month #2 📉

Journalist’s least engaging content still outperforms all other B2B content

Maybe unsurprisingly, journalists drive the most shares and links through entertaining content types like lists, curiosity-driving “Why” posts, and interviews.

And, in order, their most linked content reflects the marketing funnel perfectly ✨

Journalist’s least engaging content stage – Conversion content (think: “free trial”, “affordable”, “buy” headlines) – still gains 4x more shares, and 0.2 more links than the top performers in all B2B content.
